Health and safety facts checked against AVMA, AAHA, ASPCA, FDA and CDC guidance

  • Your dog is getting gray around the muzzle, and you're not sure what's age and what's worth a call to the vet.
  • You've been pulled, tripped or wobbled on a walk, and it scared you.
  • You live on a fixed income and worry about the next vet bill, or about who'd look after him if you couldn't.

Not for you if you want a training course or medical treatment advice. This is everyday understanding, care and safety, and every health question ends with: ask your vet.

No. IWhy I wrote it

"I Was Only Reading the Tail"

My dad got a yellow Lab named Biscuit the year he turned 66. That dog got him out of bed, out of the house and out of his own head for eleven years.

But for a long time, Dad didn't really understand him. He thought a wagging tail meant a happy dog. He thought a dog who stopped coming upstairs had gotten independent. He wrapped the leash around his hand.

The tail was hiding a scared dog. The stairs were his hips. And the leash put Dad on the sidewalk one wet October morning.

Every one of those lessons came the hard way. None of them had to.

This guide is everything I wish someone had handed my dad the day Biscuit came home.

No. IIThe rules behind the book

DOGI's Five Rules

"He's been reading you his whole life. This is how you read him back."

  1. Read the whole dog, not one part. Eyes, ears, mouth, tail and body, together.
  2. A change is a message. Something new, or something stopped, is worth writing down.
  3. Dogs hide pain. Your job is to notice it, and take it to your vet.
  4. Your safety is his safety. If you fall on a walk, nobody walks him tomorrow.
  5. Make the plan before you need it. The poison number, the go-bag, the person who'll take him.

Chapter 9 · Walking Without FallingThe Dog Connection Guide · 2026

Before you leave the house

The CDC estimated about 86,600 fall injuries a year linked to cats and dogs, and 88% involved dogs. About a quarter of the dog-related falls happened while walking the dog. Here's how I set up every walk.

  1. Shoes first. Sturdy, flat, closed shoes with grippy soles. Not slippers, not sandals.
  2. Leash on inside, with the door closed. Clip it on before you open the door, so he can't bolt.
  3. "Wait" at the door. He sits and waits while you open it, then you step out first or together.
  4. Phone in your pocket, charged. Not in your hand.
  5. Look at the weather. Ice, wet leaves and fresh rain are when people go down.

Where this comes from: the CDC's study of pet-related falls treated in U.S. emergency rooms, 2001 to 2006.

That's one page. Every chapter is built like it: what he's telling you, the steps to take, and a notice-do-ask card you can act on this week.

Who's Writing This

DOGI
DOGIA lifetime with dogs, young and old
A change is a message. Your job is to notice it.

I go by DOGI. I've had a dog at my feet for nearly my whole life, and I've lived with them at every age: the wild puppy years, the steady middle years and the slow, gray, wonderful last ones.

The dog who taught me the most was my dad's yellow Lab, Biscuit, who came to live with him the year Dad turned 66. For eleven years I watched the two of them grow older together and learn to look after each other. This guide is everything they taught me, checked against what the vets and public-health experts actually say.

I'm not a vet, a behaviorist or a trainer, and I'll never pretend to be. Every health and safety fact in the book comes from the AVMA, AAHA, the ASPCA, the FDA or the CDC, and every health question ends with: ask your vet.

Common Questions

Is a paper copy mailed to me?

No. It's a digital PDF you read on your phone, tablet or computer, or print at home. A large-print edition is included.

I'm not good with computers. How do I get it?

The page you see after paying has a big download button, and an email brings the same button a few minutes later.

Is this veterinary advice?

No. I'm not a vet. The book helps you notice what's going on and tells you when to call your vet. It never diagnoses anything or gives medicine doses.

My dog isn't old yet. Is it still for me?

Yes. Part 1 (reading your dog and answering back) and Part 3 (safe walks, kitchen poisons, emergencies) fit a dog of any age. Part 2 is there for when he gets gray.

Is there anything about cats?

It's written for dog owners. There's one box for homes that have a cat too, about the lilies the FDA warns are toxic to cats.

Is it safe to pay here?

Yes. The button takes you to Stripe's secure checkout, so your card details never touch this page. One payment, not a subscription.

Why is it $19 now and $27 later? What is the timer?

$19 is my welcome price for your first 15 minutes here. After that the page shows the regular $27. Reloading doesn't restart the clock.

What if it's not for me?

Reply to your receipt within 30 days for a full refund. No questions.
